Sunday October 2, 2011 the Detroit Lions and the Dallas Cowboys entered into a furious competition of football for the National Football League. What appeared to be a lopsided win for the Dallas Cowboys as they headed into the locker room at half time with a 24-3 lead quickly became a one-sided display of skill and agility by the Detroit Lions overcoming a 24 point deficit in the final 2 quarters of competition. The Detroit Lions win 30-34. This game is one of the greatest comebacks in the Detroit Lions history and a great disappointment on behalf of the Dallas Cowboys.

Unfortunately, people of God, that’s right church people become involved, entangled, even ensnared by this type of competition. Oh, it’s ok for the NFL, NBA, MLB and any other professional league; as a matter of fact this form of competition is ok across the board in any sporting event on all levels. It’s qualified as healthy competition. However, this form of competition is detrimental to the body of Christ. Oh yes, it happens all the time! Next time you drive down the street in the hood, count the number of churches you find in a 3 block radius. Not too long ago a co-worker and I counted 9 churches in a 3 block radius here in west Dallas Texas aka Oak Cliff Texas. I just believe that the spirit of competition has influenced and infiltrated believers in the body of Christ. Thus we have the spirit of denominationalism, spirit of separatism, and even racism.  I’ve even heard it said “ my church is better than yours, my pastor is better than your, our choir is better than yours” pitifully expressed but true. I feel like Rodney King “Cant we all just get along”.   The show Sundays’ Best and the How sweet the sound contest display an awesome array of talent and even at times anointing. However it’s competition in the body of Christ. Is it edifying? We know it’s entertaining. Does it mimic the secular show American Idol or Americas Got Talent?  It’s just my opinion so take it for what its worth. By the way this is my Blog.

What does the Bible say about competition? You know I had to go there. I’m my research on this topic of competition. I found it to be interesting that the word competition is synonymous to Comparison, Envy, and Jealousy. Very interesting. So what are the dangers of competition? Competition not only disrupts your relationship with others but also your relationship with God. Remember Miriam and Aaron when they were competing for the attention that Moses was getting and it brought them under God’s Judgment. (Numbers12:1-2). This type of competition breeds envy. Remember Jesus rebuked John and the other disciples for reporting a man who was not a part of the inner circle or original 12 that was casting out Demons in the name of Jesus (Mark 9: 38-40). Jesus replied “anyone who is not against us is for us”

In Closing, Christianity is all about service, not personal or corporate advancement. Competition is fueled by pride, but the commitment to serve is fueled by humility. Be aware of the competition and the subtle maladaptive mentalities that creep into our sub conscious and eventually become conscious through our actions causing division in the Body of Christ. Remember, we are one body in Christ that’s made up of various gifts, talents and anointing. We are to lift each other up and not become competitors against each other. I’m left to wander what would happen if those 9 Pastors in Oak Cliff came together as one church in the neighborhood? Perhaps they would have more than 50 members combined working together like the original Acts 2 church.

The Promise from God:

We are all parts of his one body, and each of us has a different work to do. And since we are all one body in Christ, we belong to each other, and each of us needs all the others…………..Romans 12:5 NASB

Stay tuned. Next week we will be discussing Competitions evil twin; Comparison!
